Biography

Human Character

Beyond his professional achievements, Engineer Alcaraz was defined by his extraordinary human character. He was an approachable, humble, and grateful leader who led by example and fostered teamwork through respect and constant recognition of his collaborators.

The son of Salvador Alcaraz and Adela Esparza, he showed charisma and sensitivity from an early age. His life was a reflection of solid values: simplicity, empathy, commitment, and a love for a job well done. Those who knew him remember him as an inspiring man whose greatness lay in his everyday gestures and his personal touch.

Throughout his career, he received numerous accolades, yet he always remained modest. His greatest legacy was not the awards he won, but the people he mentored and the authentic relationships he cultivated.

Career Path

José Francisco Alcaraz Esparza was born in 1946 in Tamazula de Gordiano, Jalisco, into an environment closely tied to the sugar industry. From a young age, he showed a keen interest in chemistry, a discipline he discovered alongside a cousin while conducting school experiments. He studied Chemistry at the University of Guadalajara, where he solidified his professional calling.

During the 1960s, he witnessed firsthand the regulatory shifts in the tequila industry that allowed the use of sugars other than agave. Driven by his expertise and an unwavering commitment to quality, he was appointed as the country's first tequila inspector. This experience allowed him to gain an in-depth understanding of the production processes within the distilleries of Jalisco.

He later refined fermentation techniques and developed highly efficient yeasts, contributing significantly to elevating the quality of tequila. His work was pivotal in the creation and consolidation of premium brands that are highly valued in the United States. He is recognized as a pioneer of the premium segment and a mentor to generations of master distillers.

Family Legacy

On December 21, 1973, he married María Teresa Romero Campos, who remained his steadfast companion throughout his life. Together, they built a home founded on respect, communication, and love, raising a family of four children.

To his family, Francisco Alcaraz was a devoted husband, an exemplary father, and an inspiring grandfather. His life was guided by his deep commitment to his loved ones, leaving behind a profound legacy of values, unity, and affection.

His impact transcended both the professional and the personal spheres. As Clayton Szczech, founder of Experience Tequila, expressed:

“His contributions to distillation make him one of the most important tequileros of the last generation. But his legacy is even broader, as he was a mentor to distillers who today produce some of the world's finest tequilas.”
